富山市（とやまし）は、富山県の中央部から南東部にかけて位置する市。富山県の県庁所在地及び人口が最多の市であり、中核市、保健所政令市、中枢中核都市に指定されている。また、中核市で最も面積の大きい市である[1]。
概要越中富山の置き薬
富山県の県庁所在地で、同県の中央部から南東部に位置する。2005年4月1日、富山市、上新川郡大沢野町、大山町、婦負郡八尾町、婦中町、山田村、細入村の7市町村による新設合併によって現在の富山市が発足した。
この合併により、全国の都道府県庁所在地の中では2番目に広い総面積を持つようになった[注釈 1]（全国の市では11位）。また、富山県の29.24%の面積を占め、ひとつの市町村が県に占める面積の割合としては全国一である。市域は富山県域に対して南北にわたっており、日本海と南側の県境いずれにも接している[注釈 2]。
広い総面積に対し、可住地面積比率は38.2%で、市域の約6割が林野地となっている[2]。また、市街化区域面積比率は5.8%であり[2]、環境モデル都市の選定を受けてコンパクトシティを目指した都市計画を進めている。また、環境未来都市、国際会議観光都市、国連エネルギー効率改善都市、レジリエント・シティ、持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）におけるSDGs未来都市、自治体SDGsモデル事業に選定されている。市内の多くは立山黒部ジオパークに、南東部は中部山岳国立公園に指定されている。同市は2011年よりインドネシア・バリ島で小水力発電施設の設置事業を推進するなど、国際的な環境事業に力を入れており、2017年（平成29年）2月2日には日本の中核都市としては初めて国際協力機構（JICA）と人材交流や技術協力などの協定を結んでいる。同市は県のプライメイトシティとして機能している。北陸電力や北陸銀行などライフラインの本社や支店が置かれ、商業・工業面において富山県の中心のみならず北陸地方の中心都市としての機能も担っている。単独の人口比較では石川県金沢市に劣るが、都市雇用圏での比較では人口・経済規模ともに金沢都市圏より富山都市圏の方が大きく、新潟都市圏とともに日本海側の都市では福岡都市圏、札幌都市圏、北九州都市圏に次ぐ規模である[3]。
