来歴1965年

父は技師であり、越後国村上藩藩士の末裔で朝鮮総督府で海軍武官を務めていた祖父の勧めで朝鮮総督府鉄道に勤務した[10][11]。6人兄弟（兄3人、姉、弟）。2歳の頃に、父の南満洲鉄道（満鉄）への転勤のため、満洲へ移る[11]。終戦後、12歳でハルピンから引き揚げ。博多から、本籍地の新潟県岩船郡村上本町（現・村上市）に移り、同市大工町にある寶田家の菩提寺笠原山善行寺に身を寄せる。寺の四畳半で2年間暮らし、村上本町国民学校に通った[出典 4]。

1953年、東京都立豊島高等学校卒業後に東宝ニューフェイス第6期生として俳優生活をスタート[出典 5]。同期には佐原健二、河内桃子、藤木悠、日活に移籍した岡田眞澄がいる。同年、映画『かくて自由の鐘は鳴る』でデビュー[出典 6]。翌年、特撮映画『ゴジラ』で初主演を果たす[出典 7]。長身・美形の二枚目俳優として東宝映画の若手トップスターとなり、数多くの映画に主演[5]。全盛期には連日連夜銀座に繰り出し夜遊びに精を出していた。

1959年の日本人初のミス・ユニバースの栄冠に輝いた児島明子と1966年4月29日（32歳の誕生日）に結婚し[16][17][注釈 3]、1974年1月の次男誕生までの8年間に2男1女をもうけた[18][注釈 4]が1984年に離婚した[19]。
