宇部市（うべし）は、山口県西部にある市。周防灘（瀬戸内海）に面している。
概要

宇部市は山口県内で下関市、山口市に次ぎ3番目の人口を擁する市であり、また1km2当たりの人口密度は防府市、下松市に次ぐ県内第3位である。中枢中核都市に指定されており、政令指定都市・中核市・特例市・保健所政令市・計量特定市のいずれでもなく県庁所在地でもない市として指定を受けるのは本市と富山県射水市の2市のみである[3]。

宇部市の前身でもある宇部村は、江戸時代まで厚狭郡南部の半島状地形の先端部にある一寒村であったが、明治以降に宇部炭鉱での採炭が本格化したことで炭鉱都市が形成され、さらに炭鉱から化学工業やエネルギー事業を展開していった宇部興産（後のUBE）の企業城下町として発展した[4]。
