英語は、中英語期に、強勢のある長母音の舌の位置が一段ずつ高くなり、これ以上高くなることのできない [i?] [u?] はいわゆる「音割れ」[3]を起こして二重母音化した[1]。このため、該当する英単語の発音と綴り(スペル)が一致しない現象の大きな原因となった。
この大母音推移以前は英語の綴りはその発音にほぼ忠実で、他の言語とほぼ同様に「発音と綴り」の一致関係があった。一例を挙げるならば日本におけるローマ字の読み方に近かった。しかし大母音推移後は綴りと発音との一定のずれが生じた。
その後、15世紀中頃以降の活版印刷の技術向上と、それに付随した書物等の文書の普及などに伴って、語の綴りは固定化される一方で、発音だけが変化を続けて、現在のようなずれがみられるようになった。
