大宮駅（おおみやえき）は、埼玉県さいたま市大宮区錦町にある、東日本旅客鉄道（JR東日本）・東武鉄道・埼玉新都市交通の駅である。
概要

東京と北関東・東北地方・信越地方・北陸地方・北海道地方を結ぶ多数の新幹線および在来線・私鉄が乗り入れる東京以北最大のターミナル駅。駅周辺は合併以前の旧大宮市（大宮地区）の中心市街地である。また、当駅付近を首都高速埼玉新都心線・埼玉大宮線や、国道16号・国道17号・新大宮バイパスが通るなど、道路交通網としても県内の拠点に位置しているため、多くの高速バスや長距離バスが発着し、駅前にバスターミナルも形成されている。

当駅は東北本線上にあり、乗り入れ路線は、新幹線が東北新幹線・山形新幹線・秋田新幹線・北海道新幹線の東北系統と上越新幹線・北陸新幹線の上越系統の合計6新幹線（山形新幹線と秋田新幹線はミニ新幹線）、JR在来線は京浜東北線・宇都宮線・高崎線・埼京線・川越線、また私鉄路線として東武野田線（東武アーバンパークライン）・埼玉新都市交通伊奈線（ニューシャトル）の合計13路線と[1]、乗り入れ路線数は東京駅に次いで全国2位。上野東京ライン・湘南新宿ライン、東北貨物線経由で乗り入れる武蔵野線（むさしの号・しもうさ号）も加えると合計16路線。古くから北関東、信越、北陸、東北方面への長距離列車・新幹線が乗り入れる首都圏の「北の玄関口」として機能している。

JTBパブリッシングなどの時刻表における名目上の県・市の代表駅は埼玉県庁舎の最寄駅である浦和駅（旧浦和市、現さいたま市浦和区）が表記されているが、その乗り入れ路線数・1日の乗降者数・駅周辺の市場経済規模等、埼玉県内のみならず全国でも有数のターミナル駅であり、当駅が実質的に県下最大の駅となっている。1日平均乗降者数約70万人は埼玉県内では最も多い。

新幹線・在来線ともにすべての営業列車が停車し、2017年7月以降の多客期には、東北新幹線において大宮駅始発・終着となる臨時「はやぶさ」が新たに設定された[2]。

また、当駅北側に東日本旅客鉄道（JR東日本）大宮総合車両センター（旧：大宮工場）・日本貨物鉄道（JR貨物）大宮車両所が、南側に大宮操車場があり、2007年10月14日にはJR東日本の創立20周年記念事業のメインプロジェクトとして、大宮総合車両センターに隣接した大宮区大成町に鉄道博物館が開館。
