坂本 龍馬（さかもと りょうま、天保6年11月15日〈1836年1月3日〉 - 慶応3年11月15日〈1867年12月10日〉）は、日本の幕末の土佐藩士、志士、経営者。諱は直陰（なおかげ）、のちに直柔（なおなり）。通称は龍馬[注 1]。他に才谷 梅太郎（さいたに うめたろう）などの変名がある（「手紙と変名」の項参照）。
概略

土佐藩郷士の家に生まれ、脱藩した後は志士として活動し、貿易会社と政治組織を兼ねた亀山社中（のちの海援隊）を結成した。薩長同盟の成立に協力するなど、倒幕および明治維新に関与した。大政奉還成立後の慶応3年11月15日（1867年12月10日）に京都河原町通蛸薬師下ルの近江屋において暗殺された。実行犯については今井信郎による自供から、京都見廻組によるものという説が有力であるが[1]、異説もある（詳細は「近江屋事件」を参照）。贈正四位。

龍馬は天保6年11月15日（1836年1月3日）[注 2]、土佐国土佐郡上街本町一丁目（現・高知県高知市上町一丁目）の土佐藩郷士（下級武士・足軽）坂本家に父・坂本直足（八平）、母・幸の間の二男として生まれた。
