坂本 龍馬（さかもと りょうま、天保6年11月15日〈1836年1月3日〉 - 慶応3年11月15日〈1867年12月10日〉）は、日本の幕末の土佐藩士、志士、経営者。諱は直陰（なおかげ）、のちに直柔（なおなり）。通称は龍馬[注 1]。他に才谷 梅太郎（さいたに うめたろう）などの変名がある（「手紙と変名」の項参照）。
概略

土佐藩郷士の家に生まれ、脱藩した後は志士として活動し、貿易会社と政治組織を兼ねた亀山社中（のちの海援隊）を結成した。薩長同盟の成立に協力するなど、倒幕および明治維新に関与した。大政奉還成立後の慶応3年11月15日（1867年12月10日）に京都河原町通蛸薬師下ルの近江屋において暗殺された。実行犯については今井信郎による自供から、京都見廻組によるものという説が有力であるが[1]、異説もある（詳細は「近江屋事件」を参照）。贈正四位。

龍馬は天保6年11月15日（1836年1月3日）[注 2]、土佐国土佐郡上街本町一丁目（現・高知県高知市上町一丁目）の土佐藩郷士（下級武士・足軽）坂本家に父・坂本直足（八平）、母・幸の間の二男として生まれた。22歳年上の兄（権平）と3人の姉（千鶴、栄、乙女）がいた。坂本家は質屋、酒造業、呉服商を営む豪商才谷屋の分家で、第六代・直益のときに長男・直海が藩から郷士御用人に召し出されて坂本家を興した[2]。土佐藩の武士階級には上士と下士があり、商家出身の坂本家は下士（郷士）だったが（坂本家は福岡家に仕えていたという）、分家の際に才谷屋から多額の財産を分与されており、非常に裕福な家庭だった[3][4]。

龍馬の父・坂本直足は婿養子として坂本家を継いだ人物で、実祖父の山本家（山本信固）や、その弟・宮地信貞（宮地家を相続）は共に白札郷士であり、龍馬は血統上は上士の人物である[5]。

幼少時は泣き虫で弱虫のひ弱な少年であった。実母の幸を10歳の時に病気で亡くす。以後、姉の乙女が母代わりに龍馬を教育する。12歳まで夜尿が直らなかったが、乙女が夜中に厠に起こして連れて行き克服させた。乙女は身長176cm、体重110kgを超える当時としては尋常ならざる体躯を持ち、剣術にも秀でていたため、龍馬の剣術師範も務めたと伝説的に語られる。龍馬は終生、乙女への感謝と恋慕を失わず、現存する龍馬直筆の乙女宛の手紙は16通残っている[要出典]。詳細は「坂本龍馬の系譜」を参照
江戸遊学

武術で小栗流目録を得た嘉永6年（1853年）、龍馬は武術修行のための1年間の江戸自費遊学を藩に願い出て許された。出立に際して龍馬は父・八平から『修業中心得大意』[6]を授けられ、溝淵広之丞とともに土佐を出立した。4月頃に江戸に到着し、築地の中屋敷[7]（または鍛冶橋の土佐藩上屋敷[8]）に寄宿し、北辰一刀流の桶町千葉道場（現・東京都中央区）の門人となる。道場主の千葉定吉は北辰一刀流創始者千葉周作の弟で、その道場は「小桶町千葉」として知られており、道場には定吉のほかに長男・重太郎と3人の娘（そのうち一人は龍馬の婚約者と言われるさな子）がいた。
