1953年（昭和28年）5月18日 - 二級国道182号広島松江線（広島県広島市 - 島根県松江市）として制定される。

1963年（昭和38年）4月1日 - 一級国道54号（広島県広島市 - 島根県松江市）となる。国道182号は二級国道182号新見福山線となり岡山県新見市 - 広島県福山市間の路線に変更される。
