国道138号 起点
山梨県富士吉田市 上宿交差点付近

国道138号（こくどう138ごう）は、山梨県富士吉田市から静岡県御殿場市を経由して、神奈川県小田原市に至る一般国道である。
概要国道1号（重複区間）への分岐

宮ノ下交差点付近

山梨県の南東部で位置する富士吉田市の中心市街から、富士山の東部山麓の山中湖や箱根を経由しての神奈川県小田原市街地に至る一般国道の路線である。主な通過地は、山梨県南都留郡山中湖村、静岡県御殿場市、神奈川県足柄下郡箱根町で、富士吉田 - 山中湖間は「旧鎌倉往還」、山中湖 - 御殿場 - 箱根間は「箱根裏街道」とよばれる道で、籠坂峠・乙女峠といった山岳地も通過する。足柄下郡箱根町宮ノ下から終点の小田原市民会館前までの区間は、国道1号（東海道）と道路を重複する。御殿場市内に旧道に並行するバイパス道路として開通し、現在は現道になっている御殿場バイパスがある。歴史的には、1953年（昭和28年）に最初の国道指定を受けて二級国道138号富士吉田小田原線となり、1965年（昭和40年）に道路法改正に伴い一般国道138号になった。

起点の上宿交差点は国道137号・国道139号と接続し、御殿場で国道246号裾野バイパスと連絡、終点側は新・旧の国道1号と結ばれる。途中の御殿場バイパスでは高速自動車国道である新東名高速道路と新御殿場ICで、同じく高速自動車国道である東名高速道路と御殿場ICで接続しており、中央自動車道と新東名高速道路・東名高速道路を連絡する重要な自動車専用道路路線である他、主要幹線国道とも連絡を担う重要な幹線道路になっている。富士山の眺望もよく、沿線に山中湖、箱根温泉などの観光地や大型ショッピングセンターが点在し、観光シーズンなどには道路が渋滞するほど混雑するときがある。
