四日市市（よっかいちし）は、三重県北部（北勢）に位置する市。
人口は県庁所在地の津市を凌いで三重県内最多で[1]、国から施行時特例市と保健所政令市の指定を受けている。また、都市雇用圏の人口は、東海地方では名古屋市、浜松市、静岡市、岐阜市、豊橋市に次いで第6位である。また、三重県という県名は、かつて四日市市（当時は四日市町）が属していた郡名が由来となっている。
臨海部の四日市港に四日市コンビナートが立地する工業都市で、昭和戦後期の四日市ぜんそく公害病事件を克服した環境問題推進都市である。豊田市や名古屋市などとともに中京工業地帯を構成する日本有数の臨海工業都市であるが、近年は内陸部に電子機器などのハイテク産業の集積が進みキオクシア（旧東芝メモリ）の半導体工場はNAND型フラッシュメモリの製造拠点として世界最大級の規模を誇る。
概要近鉄四日市駅前ふれあいモール
四日市市は、中京工業地帯の代表的な工業都市である。市内を走る近鉄名古屋線・湯の山線、JR関西本線、伊勢鉄道、四日市あすなろう鉄道の鉄道網を利用する市内外からの通勤・通学者も多く、独自の四日市都市雇用圏を形成している。
中心市街地は近鉄四日市駅周辺である。幅70mの中央通りは四日市を代表する大通りで、戦後の復興計画で建設された。郊外の団地は昭和の大合併で編入された地域で、三重団地（三重地区）、桜台（桜地区)、三滝台（川島地区）、あかつき台（八郷地区）など、市内西部に位置する地域が多い。南部の笹川団地（四郷地区）には日系ブラジル人の居住者が多い。
三重県北勢地域の中心都市である為、三重郡の各町や桑名市、鈴鹿市、亀山市などから当市へ通勤・通学する者も多く、昼夜間人口比率は100%を超えている。
2000年11月1日の制度運用開始とともに特例市に指定された。2005年2月7日に隣接する三重郡楠町を平成の大合併による市町村合併で編入したことで人口が30万人を超えたため中核市移行を目指しているが、大矢知地区の産業廃棄物問題が解決しないため移行の目途が立っていない。中核市移行の準備段階として、2008年4月1日に保健所政令市に指定された。
古くは、東海道の宿駅（→四日市宿）で、伊勢神宮への分岐点が日永地区に追分という地名として残っている。
