北見市中心市街地
北見市（きたみし）は、北海道東部に位置する市。オホーツク総合振興局の中核都市。
オホーツク海沿岸から石北峠まで東西約110キロメートル (km) に広がっており、北方領土内を除く国内の地方公共団体では4番目、北海道内では1番の広さを誇る[1]。
概要北見市街（2011年4月）
現在の市域は2006年（平成18年）の合併で旧北見市が端野町・常呂町・留辺蘂町と新設合併し成立したものである。旧北見市は商工業・サービス業、端野町は農業、常呂町は漁業・農業、留辺蘂町は林業・温泉を中心に発展した[2]。
玉ねぎの生産量・出荷量、白花豆の生産量が日本一となっており[3]、ホタテ漁が盛んで「ホタテ養殖発祥の地」にもなっている[4]。また、ピアソン記念館やワッカ原生花園、常呂遺跡を含む「オホーツク沿岸の古代遺跡群」は「北海道遺産」に[5][6][7]、「北見のハッカとハーブ」は環境省による「かおり風景100選」に選定されている[8]。留辺蘂のつつじ山に自生しているエゾムラサキツツジは日本随一となるツツジの名所で「北海道指定天然記念物」になっている[9]。
スポーツ合宿の誘致に積極的に取り組んでおり、夏はラグビー・陸上競技・野球、冬はスキーなどで北見を訪れている[10]。
また、旧常呂町はカーリングの町として知られ、カーリング専用施設（アドヴィックス常呂カーリングホール）があり、住民らによるカーリングチームとリーグ戦もあり[11]、多くのカーリングの五輪日本代表選手も輩出している。
