北九州市（きたきゅうしゅうし）は、福岡県北部に位置する市であり、政令指定都市である。
福岡市に次ぐ九州地方第2位の都市であり、非都道府県庁所在地においては神奈川県川崎市に次ぐ第2位の人口を有する[1]。

関門海峡に面した九州地方最北端の都市。九州地方の玄関口として栄えた歴史を持ち、かつての四大工業地帯であった北九州工業地帯（北九州工業地域）の中核を担う。1963年2月10日に門司市、小倉市 、若松市、八幡市、戸畑市の5市の対等合併[2]を経て誕生し、同年4月1日に三大都市圏を除く地域では初の政令指定都市に移行した（都道府県庁所在地以外及び本州以外の都市としても初）[3]。1979年に県庁所在地の福岡市に抜かれるまで九州地方最多の人口を誇る都市であった。当市を中心とした北九州都市圏のほか[一次資料 2]、関門海峡を挟んで隣接する山口県下関市などとともに関門都市圏を形成する[4]。また、福岡市とともに北九州・福岡大都市圏を形成しており、都市圏の経済規模においては三大都市圏に次ぐ規模を誇る。人口規模は日本の市で13位[5]、九州地方では福岡市に次ぐ2位であり、同市とともにグローバル創業・雇用創出特区として国家戦略特別区域に指定されている[6]。非都道府県庁所在地においては神奈川県川崎市に次ぐ2位の人口を有する[一次資料 3]。
関門海峡で本州と隣接していることから、古くから九州の玄関口・交通の要衝としての役割を担ってきた。当市は九州内の主要な国道や鉄道路線の起点であり、1880年代から九州鉄道（現在の鹿児島本線の前身）[7]や関門海峡に面した門司港、かつて石炭積み出し港として栄えた若松港などの港湾をはじめとする交通基盤の整備が進んだ。
