作業 (さぎょう、英語: occupation) とは、日々の生活で行われ、名付けられている一群の活動と課題であり、個人と文化によって価値と意味があたえられたものである。

作業とは、身のまわりのことを自分で行うセルフケア、生活を楽しむレジャー、社会的経済的活動に貢献する生産活動など、人々が行うすべての営みである。（アメリカ作業療法士協会（2002年））
作業とは、文化的個人的に意味を持つ活動の一群であり、文化の語彙のなかで名付けられ、人間が行うことである。（作業科学（1991年））
作業療法における作業
作業療法の目的であり、手段でもある。
作業療法士は、クライエントにとって適したやり方で「作業ができる」よう支援する専門家である。
作業療法は、作業ができるようになるために必要な知識と技術の総称である。
作業療法では、作業のできる程度によって人間の現在の状態や役割が決まり、そして将来どうなっていくかが決まると考えられている。そのため、当事者にとって意味のある作業を適切にできることに焦点を当てる。また、障害をもつ人々も、意味のある作業ができる平等な社会を理想と考えている。
