略歴

山形県東田川郡余目町（現・庄内町）出身。1964年山形県立酒田東高等学校卒業、1968年中央大学法学部法律学科卒業。1973年早稲田大学大学院文学研究科西洋史専修修士課程修了、1976年同博士課程単位取得退学。1969年から1971年 カーン大学人文学部留学。1979年愛知大学法経学部助教授、1987年名古屋大学文学部助教授、1991年教授、2000年同文学研究科教授。2009年定年退職、特任教授。2009年日本学士院会員、西洋中世学会会長[2]。名古屋大学高等研究院アカデミー会員。

1984年から1986年 パリ第10大学客員研究員、1995年フランス国立科学研究センター（CNRS）研究員[3]、日仏歴史学会理事、早稲田大学博士（文学）、2001年 コレージュ・ド・フランス招聘教授、社会科学高等研究院客員教授、高等研究実習院客員教授、エクス＝アン＝プロヴァンス大学客員教授、2004年 パリ第1大学招聘教授、2011年フランス学士院碑文・美文アカデミー外国人連携会員[4]

2016年 皇居・講書始の儀で「西洋中世修道院の文化史的意義」を進講。
