ワーテルローの戦い（ワーテルローのたたかい、仏: Bataille de Waterloo、英: Battle of Waterloo、蘭: Slag bij Waterloo、独: Schlacht bei Waterloo 地名の「ワーテルロー」はフランス語の発音に基づく。明治期の日本の書ではウオトルロー・ウオートルロー）は、1815年6月18日、ベルギー（当時ネーデルラント連合王国領）のワーテルロー近郊においてイギリス・オランダをはじめとする連合軍およびプロイセン軍と、フランス皇帝ナポレオン1世（ナポレオン・ボナパルト）率いるフランス軍（大陸軍=グランダルメ）との間で行われた一連の戦闘を指す名称である。フランス軍が敗北し[5]、ナポレオンにとって最後の戦いとなった。ラ・ベル＝アリアンスの戦い (独: Schlacht bei Belle-Alliance) ともいう。
概要

1815年にエルバ島から帰還し皇帝の座に返り咲いたナポレオンは、第七次対仏大同盟の態勢が整う前にこれを撃破することを企図。フランス国境北東部付近に位置していた初代ウェリントン公爵アーサー・ウェルズリー麾下の英蘭連合軍とゲプハルト・レベレヒト・フォン・ブリュッヘル元帥のプロイセン軍を打倒すべく、自ら12万の兵力を率いて出陣した。両勢力は1815年6月16日から3日間に渡り交戦し、ナポレオンは前哨戦となるリニーの戦いでブリュッヘルのプロイセン軍に勝利したものの、6月18日の戦いで大敗し潰走を余儀なくされる。連合軍はこれを追撃してフランスに侵攻し、ルイ18世を復位させた。退位したナポレオンはイギリスに降伏してセントヘレナ島に流され、1821年にこの地で死去した。

ナポレオンの敗因は、一軍を委ねたエマニュエル・ド・グルーシー元帥との連携に失敗したうえ、天候の都合で攻撃開始を遅らせたことが裏目に出て敵勢力の結集を許してしまったことが挙げられる。なお、実際に主戦場となったのは現在のベルギー国内のラ・ベル・アリアンスで、ブリュッセルからおよそ13km南東にあり、ワーテルローの町からは1.6kmほど離れている。この古戦場には「ライオンの丘（英語版）」と呼ばれる巨大な記念碑がそびえ立っている。
