J.Y. Parkが計画した「K-POP 3.0」プロジェクトの基盤として、日本のソニーミュージックと韓国のJYPエンターテインメントによる日韓合同のグローバルオーディションプロジェクト「Nizi Project」の最終順位上位9名で結成された[7][8][9]。
グループ名は、Nizi Projectの「Nizi（虹）」と、メンバーやファンを表す「U」に由来し「Need you」という意味を含んでいる[10]。プロデューサーのJ.Y. Parkはメンバーに対して「人は一人では成功できない。みんなにはお互いが必要で、ファンが必要である」と語っている[11][12]。グループカラーは全7色[13][14]、メンバーカラーは全9色[15][14]。
ファンクラブ名、ファンの総称は「WithU（ウィジュー）」で、「NiziUを支えるファン（U）と一緒に（With）世界へ向けて活動していく」という思いが込められている[16][17]。
グループ挨拶は「（MAKO）みなさんこんにちは! せーの!（全員）We need U! 私たちNiziUです!」。 6月26日、Nizi Projectの最終回でメンバー9人が決定し、NiziU結成[18]。 6月30日、デジタルミニアルバム『Make you happy』の日韓同時リリースによりプレデビュー。翌7月1日には全世界でリリースされた[19]。7月3日、「Make you happy」が国内音楽配信サイトにおけるシングル・アルバムランキング1位の合算で64冠、MVは2000万回再生突破[20]。7月16日には世界各国の音楽配信サイトで計109冠を達成したことが報じられ、MVは5000万回再生を突破[21][22]。8月31日には公開から2か月で1億回再生を突破[23]、12月31日深夜には公開から半年で2億回再生を突破した[24]。 7月8日、「オリコン週間デジタルシングル(単曲)ランキング」「オリコン週間デジタルアルバムランキング」「オリコン週間ストリーミングランキング」で「Make you happy」がランキング史上初の週間デジタルランキング3部門で初登場1位を獲得[25]。 9月12日、日本テレビ系列『THE MUSIC DAY 人はなぜ歌うのか?』で音楽番組に初出演し、韓国からの中継で「Make you happy」をテレビ初歌唱[26]。
