ヨハネス21世（Ioannes XXI、1215年 - 1277年5月20日）は、ローマ教皇（在位：1276年 - 1277年）。本名をペドロ・ジュリアォン（Pedro Juliao）、ラテン語ではペトルス・ヒスパヌス（Petrus Hispanus）といい、現在に至るまで唯一のポルトガル出身の教皇である（ダマスス1世はポルトガル出身とされているがはっきりしない）。在位わずか8か月で死去した。　
概要

リスボンで生まれたとされ、リスボン大聖堂内の神学校で教育を受けた。後にパリ大学に入った（一部の歴史家は彼がモンペリエ大学で学んだと主張する）。

1245年から1250年にかけ、ペドロ・ヒスパノ（ヒスパニアすなわちイベリア半島出身のためこう呼ばれた）の名で知られ、シエナ大学で薬学を教えた。彼はこの地で『論理学綱要』(Summulae Logicales）を書き、この本は300年以上ヨーロッパ諸国の大学で用いられた。こうして有名な大学講師としてリスボンへ戻り、ギマランイスの宮廷でポルトガル王アフォンソ3世の教会関係の助言者・スポークスマンとなり、ギマランイスの修道院長となった。彼はリスボン司教になろうとしたが、競い負けている。その後、リスボンの学校講師となり、グレゴリウス10世の主治医となった。

1276年8月18日のハドリアヌス5世の死後、ペドロは9月13日にコンクラーヴェで教皇に選出された。その短い治世は、強力な枢機卿ジョヴァンニ・ガエターノ（ヨハネス21世の後継の教皇、ニコラウス3世となる）が代わりに政治を取り仕切っていた。ジョヴァンニは聖地への十字軍結成のため、正教会とカトリックの合同とキリスト教国の平和を保とうと努力した。しかし、タタール人を改宗させようと働きかけたが、成果はなかった。

ヨハネス21世はヴィテルボにある別荘に新たな翼を付けさせた。それは手抜き工事でつくられたため、ある時に彼が就寝していると屋根が崩れ落ち、重傷を負った。そして、事故から8日後の1277年5月20日に死んだ。恐らく、偶発的な事故で死んだ教皇はヨハネス21世が唯一である。遺体はヴィテルボのドゥオーモに埋葬された。現在もヨハネス21世の墓がそこで見られる。死後、「ヨハネス21世は魔法使いであったのだ」と噂が広まった。

ダンテ・アリギエーリは『神曲』の中で、偉大なる宗教学者の魂と共に太陽の天空でヨハネス21世と面会した話を書いた。
論理学

ヨハネスが執筆した『論理学綱要』は「ヨーロッパの13世紀に刊行されたもっとも典型的なスコラの論理学書」として、「中世の大学の教養コースで数百年にわたって使用され、数百版を重ねた著名なテキスト」であり、今日中世ヨーロッパの学問の基礎を理解するための必読書とされる[1]。
医学

性交の前後の避妊法に関する最も包括的な指南書の一つがヨハネス12世によって書かれており、彼は産児制限に関する助言と月経を起こす方法とを著名な『貧者の宝』（羅: Thesaurus Pauperum）で述べている。彼の説明する方法の多くは、現代の研究でも非常に効果的なものとされており、古典古代の女性は以前考えられていたよりも産児をよく制限していたと近年では考えられている[2]。しかし、『貧者の宝』の著者がヨハネス21世であったのかについては疑問が提出されている[3]。
