マサチューセッツ工科大学（マサチューセッツこうかだいがく、英語: Massachusetts Institute of Technology、MIT[注釈 1][10]）は、アメリカ合衆国マサチューセッツ州ケンブリッジに本部を置く私立工科大学である。1865年に設置された。

MITは全米屈指のエリート名門校の1つとされ、ノーベル賞受賞者はこれまで96人で、スタンフォード大学よりも多く、工科大学としては世界トップの受賞数となっている[注釈 2]。最も古く権威ある世界大学評価機関の英国Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) による世界大学ランキングでは、2013年版以来2024年版まで、ハーバード大学やケンブリッジ大学等を抑えて12年連続で世界第一位という記録的な偉業を達成している。特にMIT工学部(SoE)、MITコンピュータ科学・人工知能研究所(CSAIL)およびMITメディアラボ(MIT Media Lab)を擁する情報工学・コンピュータ科学分野では、スタンフォード大学、カリフォルニア大学バークレー校と共に世界最高峰の1つである。また、MITスローン経営大学院(MIT Sloan)は世界トップクラス（工科大学では世界トップ）のビジネススクールであり、MBA提供校としても名高い（M7の参加校）。

ケンブリッジ大学、オックスフォード大学、ハーバード大学、スタンフォード大学と共に世界トップ5大学として知られる。

同じくケンブリッジ市にあるハーバード大学とはライバル校であるが、学生達がそれぞれの学校の授業を卒業単位に組み込める単位互換制度 (Cross-registration system) が確立されている。このため、ケンブリッジ市は「世界最高の学びのテーマパーク」とさえも称されている。物理学や生物学などの共同研究組織を立ち上げるなど、ハーバード大学との共同研究も盛んである。また、大学新聞としてThe Techが発行されている。

MITはランドグラント大学でもある。他の科学的および古典的研究を排除し、軍事戦術を含むことなく、農業および機械工芸に関連する学問の分野を、州の立法府がそれぞれ規定するような方法で教え、生活におけるいくつかの追求と職業における産業階級の自由で実践的な教育を促進することを目的として設立された。1865年から1900年の間に約19万4千ドル(これは2008年時点の生活水準でいうところの380万ドルに相当)のグラントを得、また同時期にマサチューセッツ州から更なる約36万ドル（2008年時点の生活水準で換算して700万ドルに相当）の資金を獲得している[11]。

アメリカにおいて、シリコンバレーなどと並ぶ先端技術産業の集積地であるボストンのルート128地域においても、中核的な役割を果たす機関である。MITメディアラボは情報技術関連の先端を走る研究所としてマスメディアなどでも頻繁に取り上げられる。特筆すべきは、同研究所で開発された情報処理システム（アテネプロジェクト）がキャンパスネットワークの根幹を占めること、なおかつそのプロジェクトの研究成果が、アメリカ以外の大学院大学などでも活用され、成果を挙げていることである。
