1988年創部の東北電力サッカー部が前身であり、1999年にJリーグへ加盟した[1]。ホームタウンは仙台市[1]を中心とする宮城県全県。ホームスタジアムはユアテックスタジアム仙台[1]（詳細は#ホームスタジアムを参照）、練習場はアイリストレーニングフィールドおよび泉サッカー場[1]である。名称の由来となった仙台七夕まつりで飾られているベガルタ仙台応援七夕飾り（2009年8月6日）

チーム名の「ベガルタ」は、仙台七夕にちなんで七夕の「織り姫」と「彦星」とされる星の名前、「ベガ (Vega)」と「アルタイル (Altair)」を合わせた造語。マスコットは「ベガッ太」とルターナ(ベガッ太の妹)[1]。
歴史
Jリーグ加盟以前詳細は「東北電力サッカー部」を参照

1988年創部の東北電力サッカー部が前身。1994年に東北社会人サッカーリーグ及び全国地域サッカーリーグ決勝大会で優勝。1995年よりジャパンフットボールリーグ（JFL）へ昇格[1]。また、1994年10月に運営法人として「株式会社東北ハンドレッド」（現在の「株式会社ベガルタ仙台」）を設立し、クラブ名を「ブランメル仙台」（後述）に改称した[1]。

1995年にJリーグ準会員となり、1999年からのJリーグの2部制開始とともにJ2に参加した。なお、商標権の関係から、翌1999年1月よりクラブ名称を「ブランメル仙台」から「ベガルタ仙台」に改称した[1]。
