ハンブルク（ドイツ語: Hamburg [?hamb??k] ( 音声ファイル)[1], 現地発音[?hamb???c] ( 音声ファイル)、低ザクセン語・低地ドイツ語: Hamborg (Hamborch) [?hamb??c]  音声）は、ドイツの北部に位置し、エルベ川河口から100 kmほど入った港湾都市。
概要

正式名称は自由ハンザ都市ハンブルク（Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg、フライエ・ウント・ハンゼシュタット・ハンブルク）。行政上では、ベルリン特別市と同様に、一市単独で連邦州（ラント）を構成する特別市（都市州）なので、ハンブルク特別市やハンブルク州と呼ばれる。人口は、ドイツ第二位の約184万人[2]。国際海洋法裁判所がある。
地名の由来

「ハンブルグ」と慣例的に表記されることもあるが、ドイツ語の発音ではこの語尾の g は無声音であるため、仮名転写は「ハンブルク」[3][4]となる。現地での低地ドイツ語系の低ザクセン語に属するハンブルク方言（ドイツ語版）またはハンブルク語（ドイツ語版）による「ハンブイヒ」([?hamb??c]) や、低ザクセン語の「ハンボーホ」の発音も聞かれる。この地名の最も古い形は、834年 古高ドイツ語 ’Hammaburg’である。これは、高い乾燥した砂地の岬にあるカロリング朝の城塞を指している。’Hamma’ は、現在のドイツ語で ’Hinterschenkel, Kniekehle’「太もも、大腿、膝窩（しっか）、ひかがみ」、転じて ’Winkel, Krummung, Bucht’「角、湾曲、湾」を意味した。しかし、この地は高地ドイツ語ではなく、低地ドイツ語の地域に入るので、現在のドイツ語で ’umfriedetes Stuck Weideland’「（柵、堀などで）囲われた牧場あるいは（魚や鳥の）餌場」を意味する中低ドイツ語（mittelniederdeutsch） ’hamme’の古い形が存在したかもしれない。’burg’ は「城塞」を意味する[5]。漢字表記の「漢堡」は、「Hamburg」の音訳であり、日本語と中国語の両方で同一表記である（※漢字の「堡」は「とりで」を意味しており、「burg」の直訳）。ハンバーグの語源はハンブルクの労働者の食事として流行っていたタルタルステーキから来ている。英語でもハンブルクのことを“ハンバーグ”に近い 発音で呼ばれる。なお、フランス語では「Hambourg」（アンブール）と表記される。
