セノーテに潜るダイバー達

セノーテ（西: cenote）とは、中米ユカタン半島の低平な石灰岩地帯に見られる陥没穴に地下水が溜まった天然の井戸や泉のこと[1]。約3500か所存在する[2]。
概要

泉の下層には大規模な鍾乳洞が水没していることが知られている。水面下では決して形成されることのない鍾乳洞が見られるのは、次のように説明されている。氷期の海水準低下時に形成された長大な地下川型洞窟系が、後氷期の海面上昇に伴い、内陸部では地下水位が上昇することによって洞窟系全体が水没した。このような洞窟の天井の一部が崩落して陥没ドリーネが生じた結果、セノーテができた。

語源は、ユカテコ語の[3]「ゾノト」（dzonot）から転化したと考えられている。ユカタン半島の北部低地では川も湖もないため、主要な水源であった。ユカタン半島のセノーテは、チクシュルーブ・クレーターを埋めた石灰岩の層の中に形成されたものである。

ユカタン半島の多くのセノーテは、まず第一に真水の供給源であったが、チチェン・イッツァやバランカンチェー洞窟のセノーテのように巡礼の地、供物を捧げる場として機能したものもあった。崇拝の対象となった多くのセノーテは、マヤの雨神チャクに捧げられていた。

サック＝アクツン・システムは、総延長152.975kmの世界最大の水中鍾乳洞である。
