ザ・スプリームス（The Supremes）は、アメリカ合衆国の4人組ガールズ・グループ[5]。1959年結成、1977年解散。長い活動期間の中で所属レコード会社や音楽性は何度か変わっているが、その全盛期は1964年ごろから1969年までである。

「ローリング・ストーンの選ぶ歴史上最も偉大な100組のアーティスト」において第96位。

日本では従来、supreme（「最高位の、最大級の」の意）の英音 [s(j)?p?i?mz, s(j)u?-] から“シュープリームス”と表記されていた。21世紀に入り、米音 [s?p?i?mz, s?-] に近づけて“スプリームス”と表記する例が多いが、より原音に近い発音は「ザ・スプリームズ」であるものの、依然として作品には“シュープリームス”の表記が用いられる[6]。
歴史

1959年、ザ・プライメッツ（The Primettes）として結成。オリジナルメンバーは、ダイアナ・ロスとメアリー・ウィルソン、フローレンス・バラードにベティ・マグロウンの4人。ベディはすぐバーバラ・マーティンに替わり、そのバーバラも抜けて1961年、ザ・スプリームス[1]と改名してモータウンと契約した頃には3人組となっていた。

スプリームスは、モータウンの社長ベリー・ゴーディ・ジュニアの強力なプッシュを受け、ホーランド＝ドジャー＝ホーランドの作曲・プロデュースの下でヒットを連発した。1963年10月の「恋のキラキラ星」で初めてビルボードTop40内にチャートイン。そして、1964年6月の「愛はどこへ行ったの」が、初の全米No.1となったのを皮切りに、シングルが5作連続全米No.1を記録、スプリームスは一躍全米のアイドルグループとなる。その他の60年代の代表的なヒット曲には「ストップ・イン・ザ・ネイム・オブ・ラヴ」「恋はあせらず」「恋ははかなく」「ベイビー・ラブ」「ラブ・チャイルド」などがある。66年のアルバム『シュープリームス・ウイスキー・ア･ゴーゴー』はガール・グループのアルバムが、アルバムチャート1位になった最初の例だという[7] 。

その後、1969年のダイアナ脱退前の最後のシングルとなった「またいつの日にか（Someday We'll Be Together）」まで、合計「12作の全米No.1ヒット」を生み出した。

1967年、ダイアナだけを前面に押し出したベリーの売り方に不満を募らせ、アルコール中毒に陥ったフローレンスが解雇され、シンディ・バードソングが加入。グループ名も、ダイアナ・ロス&ザ・スプリームス（Diana Ross & the Supremes）となった。1969年には、ダイアナ・ロスが独立しソロに転向[注 1]。替わりのリード歌手としてジーン・テレルが加わる。

ダイアナの抜けた70年代以後のザ・スプリームスは、ベリーの強力な後ろ盾を失ったことで次第にヒット･チャートからは遠ざかったものの、メアリーをリーダーとしてメンバーを入れ替えながら活動を続けた。1972年には、シンディの代わりにリンダ・ロウレンスが参加。1973年、ジーンとリンダが脱退し、再参加となるシンディとシェリー・ペインが加入。1976年には、再びシンディが抜け、代わりにスーゼイ・グリーンが参加した。フローレンスは、その後ソロ歌手として2枚のシングルを出したがヒットせず、1976年に32歳で死去している（この悲劇を脚色して描いたのが、ミュージカル『ドリームガールズ』である）。

1977年、最後のオリジナルメンバーであったメアリーが独立を決意し、ロンドンでフェアウェル・コンサートが行われた。一般的には、この時点でスプリームスの歴史は幕を閉じたとされている。

1986年、元メンバーであるジーンとシェリー、リンダの3人が集まり、新たにスプリームスとして活動を再開する。オリジナルメンバーのいないこのスプリームスは、The FLOS（The Former Ladies of the Supremes 、「元・スプリームスの淑女たち」の略）と呼ばれて、オリジナルとは区別されている。ジーンの引退など、若干のメンバーチェンジを経て、このグループは現在も活動を続けている。

一方、全盛期のメンバーであるダイアナとメアリー、シンディの3人での再結成の動きもなくはなかったが、1983年、NBCテレビの特番での騒動をきっかけに、ダイアナとメアリーの不仲が表面化し、マスコミで報じられた。

1988年、ロックの殿堂入りを果たした。

2000年、ダイアナは、スプリームス再結成ツアーの計画にメアリーとシンディを誘ったが、プロモーターの提示するダイアナとの待遇の違いから2人は固辞、代わりにFLOSからリンダとシェリーが加わったが、高価なチケット代金に加えて全盛期のメンバーでない2人への風当たりは強く、この中途半端な再結成プロジェクトは、ツアー半ばで打ち切られた。

2021年2月8日、メアリー・ウィルソンがラスベガスの自宅にて死去[8][9]。死因は明らかにされていない。76歳没。
