ニューヨーク出身。父親はインテリア・デコレーター、母親は広告関連企業の重役であった[1]実兄のディックは俳優で、腹違いの弟であるティモシーも監督・脚本家・俳優、さらに甥のヴィンセントも俳優という、芸能一家に生まれ育った。

日本では『がんばれ!ベアーズ』（1976年）の校長役で有名。
