ジェームズ・ジョセフ・ブラウン・ジュニア（James Joseph Brown, Jr., 1933年5月3日 - 2006年12月25日）は、アメリカ合衆国のソウル歌手[4] 、作曲家、編曲家、音楽プロデューサー、レコード・レーベル・オーナー、社会事業家。ファンク、ブルース、ゴスペル音楽、R&B、ソウルなどの音楽性を持ち、アフリカ系アメリカ人で長きにわたり一般的な人気を博した。上記の通り、1933年生まれとあるが実際には1928年生まれの説もある[5]。

「ナンバーワン・ソウル・ブラザー」「ゴッドファーザー・オブ・ソウル」「ミスター・ダイナマイト」「ファンキー・プレジデント」など、いくつものニックネームを持っていた。シャウトを用いたソウルフルなヴォーカルと、革新的なファンク・サウンドを確立したことで知られる。

父はアメリカ先住民のアパッチ族で、母はアフリカ系アメリカ人とアジア人の系統である[6][7]。

生い立ち

ジェームズ・ジョセフ・ブラウン・ジュニアとして、サウスカロライナ州バーンウェルに生まれる。このことは、本人が自伝などでも書いているが、他にも1928年生まれという説がある。成人後に、ジェームズ・ジョセフ・ブラウンへと改名している。黒人以外の人種の血が混ざっていることは、ブラウン自身も、他の著者による書籍でも言及されている[11]。一家は貧しく、ジョージア州オーガスタに移り住んだが、ブラウンは親類の家などで育てられた。幼少時は、綿花詰みの手伝いや靴磨きを行って生計を助けた。子供時代から地元の「アマチュア・ナイト」で歌っては優勝するほどの歌唱力を持っていた、とブラウンは回想している。15歳の時の車の窃盗を、16歳（成人扱い）で反省があれば8年。反省がなければ16年という、差別的な有罪判決を下され、1948年から教護院に収容された。

教護院での服役中に、ブラウンはボビー・バードと知り合った[12]。バードの家族は、ブラウンの釈放後の生活を助けた。ブラウンは、オーガスタに戻らず、職を得るという条件で出所し、ボクサー、野球のピッチャーを短期間経験したが、脚の怪我で断念した。ブラウンは、音楽へ情熱を傾けることとなった。
