シュワー（独: Schwa）とは母音の一つ。または、その音を表す音声記号・文字 ? のこと。
音素

シュワーは、音素として「中舌中央母音」または「曖昧母音」を指す。同じ記号で表記されていても、両者は異なる。
中舌中央母音

一つは国際音声記号によって定められた中舌で口の開きの度合いも中間的な中央母音 [?] を指す。これを中舌中央母音（なかじた・ちゅうおうぼいん）または中段中舌母音（ちゅうだん・なかじたぼいん）という。
曖昧母音

もう一つは曖昧母音（あいまいぼいん）とも呼ばれ、各言語において見られるはっきりとした特徴のない中性的な母音のことをいう。言語によっては前述の中舌中央母音 [?] でないこともあるが、音素表記では /?/ と書かれることが多い。

この曖昧母音を音素としてもつ言語の発音を日本語で表記する場合、原則として「イ段」以外で表記される[1]。
名称の由来

「シュヴァー」の名称は、ヘブライ語の文法用語における ???‎ (shva, sheva)に由来する。これは、ヘブライ語における軟母音（最短母音）をあらわす用語である。

「?」の記号を中舌中央母音の意味で最初に使い、"Schwa"（シュヴァー）という名前を与えたのは、ドイツのエドゥアルト・ジーファースであったらしい[2]。

中舌中央母音としては以下のような例がある。

ルーマニア語 - c?utare [k?utare] (“検索”)

曖昧母音としては以下のような例がある。

英語 - England [????l?nd] (“イングランド”)

ドイツ語 - bitte [?b?t?] (“どうぞ”)

フランス語 - petit [p?ti] (“小さい”)

脚注^ ただし、英語の綴りのうち強勢のない "i" は、母音の [?] または [?] で発音するものがあり、これを /?/ と音素表記することがある（英語版ウィキペディアの Help:IPA_for_English では /?/ としている）。
