分類
シキミ属(学名: Illicium)は、被子植物のマツブサ科に分類される属の1つである[3]。常緑性の低木から高木であり、精油細胞をもち芳香がする。花は両性花であり、らせん状に配置した多数の花被片と雄しべをもつ(図1a)。雌しべは多数が輪生しており、集合性の袋果となる(図1b)。40種ほどが知られ、東アジアから東南アジアと北アメリカに隔離分布している。トウシキミの果実は、香辛料として広く用いられている(八角(はっかく)、大茴香(だいういきょう)またはスターアニズ; 図1b)。一方、シキミは猛毒であることが知られているが、日本では仏事に広く用いられている。
本属のみでシキミ科 (学名: Illiciaceae) とすることが多かったが、2020年現在ではふつうマツブサ科に分類される。学名はラテン語の illicere(魅了する)に由来する[4]
