サンバ（Samba）は、ブラジルの代表的な音楽（ブラジル音楽）の一つである。ブラジルでは毎年12月2日をサンバの日と定められており、この日に翌年2月前後に行われるサンバカーニバル曲集が発表されるほかにも、多くのイベントも開催される
概要

西洋音楽に於ける音楽理論の拍子という概念でサンバという音楽を解釈すると、4分の2拍子となる。ダンス音楽であり、19世紀の終わりごろ、ブラジル北東部の港町、バイーア（現在のサルバドール）で生まれた音楽がサンバの源流となった。当時のバイーアは、奴隷貿易によってアフリカから連れて来られた黒人が荷揚されて保管・販売された場所であり、源流となった音楽は彼らの間で誕生したと言われている。[1]

その後、リオ・デ・ジャネイロ（以下リオ）において、バイーアから移住したアフリカ系黒人の奴隷労働者たちが持ち込んだ、Batucada[2]（バトゥカーダ、アフリカ音楽の影響を受けたブラジルの打楽器のみの構成によるサンバ）などの音楽をもとに、ショーロやルンドゥーなどの要素がとりこまれ[3]、1910年代にサンバという音楽が確立し[4]、1930年代に普及と隆盛を迎え[5]、ブラジルを代表する音楽ジャンルとなった。結果として、黒人たちの持ち込んだアフリカの宗教的民俗舞曲と、ポルカやマズルカといったヨーロッパの舞曲など様々な要素が混ざり合ったものである。したがって、サンバがアフリカ系の音楽だとする説は一般的に多いが、これには異論も多い。

また、ラテン音楽の一つに分類されるものの、ブラジルは中南米で唯一ポルトガル語を公用語とする国であり、また使用する楽器もサルサやマンボなどのラテン音楽の楽器とは異なるものが多いので、正確にはラテン音楽には入らないという意見もある。
