クビナガカイツブリ（首長鳰、学名：Aechmophorus occidentalis）は、鳥綱カイツブリ目カイツブリ科に属する1種[1]。 本種は北アメリカ最大のカイツブリであり、56-74cmの全長である。長く細いハクチョウの様な首にある黒白と赤い目をしている。クビナガカイツブリは同じ特徴、振る舞い、習性を持つクラークカイツブリ
形態
本種は目の周りが黒く、まっすぐで緑っぽい黄色の嘴をもっている。一方でクラークカイツブリは目は白くふちどられ、先端が上を向いた輝く黄色い嘴をもっている。クビナガカイツブリの幼鳥は灰色であり、クラークカイツブリの幼鳥は白である。

クビナガカイツブリの多くは内陸の湖沼に巣をつくる。北アメリカ西部では海岸の沼地に巣をつくることもある。クビナガカイツブリは激しい求愛行動を行う。2羽の鳥が立ち上がり、水の表面をパタパタと打つ。北アメリカの北部では冬になると海岸部の外洋へ渡りを行う。北アメリカの南西部やメキシコでは定住しているかもしれない。
本種は水に潜りコイ、ニシン、軟体動物、カニやサンショウウオを捕食する。
更新世後期の北米大陸南西部には、古代の亜種[2]である Aechmophorus occidentalis lucasi が存在したとされている。クラークカイツブリが1990年代まではクビナガカイツブリと同一種とされてきたことから、出土した化石がクラークカイツブリではなくクビナガカイツブリと同定されるのか明確でない。現在の生物地理学から判断する限りはその割り当ては正しいのであるが、クビナガカイツブリおよびクラークカイツブリが果たして今と同じ地域に分布していたのか、はっきりとはわかっていない。
脚注[脚注の使い方]^ 語源：Aechmophorus とは "槍を持つ者" を意味する。古代ギリシア語の aichme （槍）と phoros （身につけている者）を合わせたものでありその嘴の形状を表している。occidentalis とはラテン語で "西の" を表す。
^ 訳者注 「古い亜種」原文 "paleosubspecies" とありましたが適切な日本語が見つからずこの表現にしています。ご存知の方がいらっしゃいましたら訳語を当てていただけると幸いです。
