カマキリモドキ (蟷螂擬（螳螂擬）、Mantispidae) はアミメカゲロウ目カマキリモドキ科に属する昆虫で、上半身はカマキリ、下半身はクサカゲロウやスズメバチに似た外観を持つ。

頭部は目の大きい三角形で、触角が短いこと以外はカマキリに似る。前脚はカマキリのような鎌構造になっており、異なる点はカマキリが鎌を胸の前に構えるのに対して、カマキリモドキは胸の横、腕より後ろに構える。小型の昆虫などを捕まえて食べることから、一種の収斂進化と見られる。翅の輪郭は脈翅目特有の滑らかな曲線でできており、よく飛び回る。黄褐色のものが多く、スズメバチに擬態しているのではないかと考えられている。
生活史

この仲間はクモ類の卵塊に寄生することが知られている[1]。対象となるのは徘徊性のクモ類（網を張らず、歩き回って獲物を捕らえる生活をするもの）である。雌成虫は草の葉裏に多数の卵を産み、ここから生まれた1齢幼虫は素早い歩行ができるほか、腹部末端が吸盤のようになっており、これを付着させてそれを軸に素早く回転するなどの動きが可能となっている。そのような幼虫は徘徊性のクモ類（出典の書には対象となるクモの群の名は挙げられていないが、一例としてアオオビハエトリが示されている）がそばに来た際に、幼虫はクモの身体に乗り込む。この際に、腹部末端を固定しての運動から、幼虫は身体を持ち上げてクモの体上に飛び移ることが可能となっている。

クモ体上の幼虫はそのクモが産卵するまで待機し、産卵時にクモの作る卵嚢に移動する。ただし幼虫が乗り移ったクモが雄であった場合、そのクモが交接する際に雌に乗り移ることも可能であるらしい。また、このような方法をとるために幼虫が乗り移ったクモが産卵するまでに必要な時間は不明であり、実際に1か月近く経過した例もあるという。また、その間も幼虫は痩せることがなく、むしろ腹部が膨らんでいたことから、このようなクモ体上の幼虫はクモの体液を摂取していると考えられ、つまり幼虫のクモへの寄生は既に始まっていると言っていい。卵嚢に移動した幼虫は2齢になり、卵嚢中のクモ卵を餌として成長してゆく。この2齢以降の幼虫は歩脚が退化して動きの緩慢な芋虫型となり、3齢までを過ごして卵嚢中で蛹となる。この蛹は歩き回ることが可能なので『ファレート成虫』と呼ばれる。適当な羽化の場まで移動した蛹はそこで羽化し、成虫となる。
