エピロス王は、紀元前6世紀頃より紀元前231年頃までエピロスを支配していた王。エピロスを支配したアイアコス王家は伝説上はアキレウスの息子ネオプトレモスに由来しているとされている[1]。しかし、これはより進んだ文明を持っていた南方のギリシア人からバルバロイと言われて蛮族扱いされていたバルカンの現地住民の一つであったエピロス人が自らをギリシアの名だたる英雄の末裔である正真正銘のギリシア人であるとしてアピールし、彼らの勢力と折り合いをつけ、その中に参入するための創作であったと考えられている[2]。
