エイジア（Asia）は、イングランド出身のプログレッシブ・ロック・バンド。プログレッシブ・ロックの分野などから多くのアーティスト達が参加してきた「スーパーグループ」の一面を持ち、その活動は35年以上に及ぶ。

1982年デビュー。メンバー全員が、既に世界的なキャリア/知名度を得ていたミュージシャンであったため、デビューの時点からスーパーグループとして注目された。「プログレッシブ・ロックのエッセンスをポップスとして鏤めた3分半の楽曲」というスタイルに沿ったファースト・アルバム『詠時感?時へのロマン』は数か月後には全米No.1を9週キープ[注釈 1]、全世界で1500万枚のセールスを達成して、このスタイルを確立させた。同アルバムからシングルカットされた「Heat Of the Moment」は全米ロックチャート1位、全米ポップチャートでも4位となり、商業的にも成功を収めている。

アルバム・デビューの時点のメンバーは、ジョン・ウェットン（ボーカル、ベース／元キング・クリムゾン、U.K.）、スティーヴ・ハウ（ギター、ボーカル／元イエス）、カール・パーマー（ドラム／元エマーソン・レイク・アンド・パーマー）、ジェフ・ダウンズ（キーボード／元バグルス、イエス）。幾多のメンバー・チェンジを繰り返したが、2007年にはオリジナル・メンバー4人での「初来日コンサート」が実現し、続く2008年にも来日を果たしている。

スーパーグループ誕生（1981年 - 1983年）

1970年代末から1980年代初頭、数々のプログレッシブ・ロック・バンドの解散と、若く才能あふれるミュージシャンの台頭が契機となり、エイジア結成のプランは流動的に動き始めた[注釈 2]。

1980年、イエスからトレヴァー・ホーン、クリス・スクワイア、アラン・ホワイトが脱退し[注釈 3]、残されたハウとダウンズは解散を決定。マネージャーだったブライアン・レーンはウェットン[注釈 4]をハウに引き合わせて[注釈 5]新しいバンドの結成を企画した。ウェットンとハウは一緒に曲作りをして、デビュー・アルバムの約半分を書き上げた。当初はサイモン・フィリップスがドラマーを務めたが、その後パーマーに交代、キーボーディストにはキース・エマーソンの加入も企画されたが、結局はハウの紹介によりダウンズが加入。ここにオリジナル・メンバーが揃い[注釈 6]、アルバム制作の頃までにウェットンとダウンズという曲作りのチームが出来上がった。バンド名はレーンが提案したエイジア（Asia）に決定。イエス解散後に彼がマネージメントするバンドとして、ロジャー・ディーンのアートワークとバンド名のロゴも採用された。1982年3月8日、ディーンのイラストをジャケットに使ったファースト・アルバム『詠時感?時へのロマン』とシングル「Heat of the Moment」が発表され、上記の商業的な成功を収めた。
