さいたま市（さいたまし）は、埼玉県の南東部に位置する市。埼玉県の県庁所在地で、人口は約134.6万人と県内最多[1]。政令指定都市の一つ[2]。また財政力指数は政令市の中では３番目である。

2001年に旧県庁所在地である浦和市（当時の人口約48万人）、大宮市（同約45万人）、与野市（同約8万人）が合併して誕生し、2005年には岩槻市（同約10万人）を編入した。政令指定都市のうち、第二次世界大戦後に合併によって誕生した基礎自治体は当市と福岡県北九州市のみ[注釈 2]。

都市雇用圏における東京都市圏の中心都市の一つであり、10区の行政区を持つ。県内唯一の人口百万人都市でもあり[1]、日本の市で9番目の人口を有しており、21県の総人口を上回っている[3]。

位置

さいたま市は関東地方の中央部に位置し、札幌市、京都市、相模原市と並び、内陸部にあり海に面していない政令指定都市である。また、政令指定都市のうち唯一、内陸県に所在している。

埼玉県内においては南部東寄りに位置するが、県内で用いられる地域区分では「中央地域」に区分されることが多い[注釈 3]。また、日本の事実上の首都である東京の都心部からは、北西に約25キロメートルの距離にあり、神奈川県横浜市や千葉市と比較しても、県庁所在都市としては東京に最も近い[注釈 4]。

その市域は広袤が東西19.6 kmおよび南北19.3 kmである[4]。面積は217.43 km2であり[5]、日本の政令指定都市としては神奈川県川崎市と大阪府堺市に次いで3番目に狭い。しかし、埼玉県内の市町村としては秩父市に次いで2番目に広く、隣接市町村数（他都道府県の自治体を含む）も12市と秩父市（15市町村）に次いで2番目に多い。
