エルヴィス・アーロン・プレスリー（Elvis Aron Presley、1935年1月8日 - 1977年8月16日）は、アメリカのロック歌手、ミュージシャン、映画俳優。全世界のレコード・カセット・CD等の総売り上げは5億枚以上とされている[8][9]、史上最も売れた音楽家の一人[10][11]。「キング・オブ・ロックンロール」と称される[12]。ミドルネームは公文書、サイン共にAronだが、墓石にはAaronと表記されている[13]。
概要

1950年代にチャック・ベリーやファッツ・ドミノ、リトル・リチャード、カール・パーキンス、ジェリー・リー・ルイス、ビル・ヘイリーら[14] と共にロック・アンド・ロール（ロックンロール）の誕生と普及に大きく貢献した、いわゆる創始者の一人であり、後進のアーティストに多大なる影響を与えた。その功績からキング・オブ・ロックンロールまたはキングと称され、ギネス・ワールド・レコーズでは「史上最も成功したソロ・アーティスト」として認定されている[15]。1950年代に、アメリカやイギリスをはじめとする多くの若者をロックンロールによって熱狂させ、それは20世紀後半のポピュラー音楽の中で、最初の大きなムーブメントを引き起こした。また、極貧の幼少時代から一気にスーパースターにまで上り詰めたことから、アメリカンドリームの象徴であるとされる。ジョン・レノン、ボブ・ディラン、ポール・マッカートニー、ボブ・シーガー、フレディ・マーキュリー、テリー・スタッフォード[16]など、多くのロック、ポップのミュージシャンたちが憧れたことでも知られる（下段・フォロワーを参照）。
